Type 2 Diabetes - Eating a Poor Diet Can Lead to Depression As Well As Diabetes

Depression has been associated with Type 2 diabetes, but the cause of the association is far from clear. In September 2015, the British Journal of Nutrition reported on a study of diet and nutrition carried out at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Canaria, Spain. Several other research centers in Spain and the USA were also involved in the study.

The study included 15,093 participants, who kept a food diary. The food was rated according to its ability to cause inflammation. The participants reported on whether they were...
diagnosed with depression, or
began taking antidepressants, or
both over a period of 8.5 years.

A total of 1051 new cases of depression were identified. Individuals who recorded the highest intake of inflammatory foods had a 47 percent higher risk of developing depression than those who recorded the lowest intake of inflammatory foods.

Among participants over 55 years of age, the relationship was even stronger, with a 2.7 times higher risk between those eating highly inflammatory foods and those eating mostly non-inflammatory foods. Among the participants with heart and blood vessel disease and abnormalities such as Type 2 diabetes, there was an 80 percent higher risk of depression among those with a diet high in inflammatory molecules versus those eating non-inflammatory foods.

From these results, it was concluded depression was significantly more common among those taking in pro-inflammatory foods. This relationship was particularly strong among people over age 55 and those with heart and blood vessel disease and Type 2 diabetes or similar health issues.

Foods are judged as to their pro-inflammatory status by their links with six inflammatory molecules found in the body...
IL-1beta
IL-4
IL-6
IL-10
TNF-alpha
C-reactive protein

The interleukins, abbreviated IL, were first discovered in white blood cells, the cells that fight infectious disease. Since then they have been found in many body cells. They have much to do with preparing white blood cells to fight attacking microorganisms.

TNF-alpha, or tumor necrosis factor alpha, is made by white blood cells and nerve cells. It has been implicated in depression as well as other disorders. C-reactive protein is produced by the liver when tissue has been damaged.

Tests of C-reactive protein in the blood are used to gauge how much inflammation is present.

According to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, eating a diet high in processed meat, chocolates, sweets, fried foods, refined grains and high-fat dairy products tend to lead to depression. The Mayo people recommend eating...
plenty of fruits and vegetables, and
limiting meat and
dairy products.

The aim is to not only prevent developing depression but to prevent or control Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease.
